This weekend we encourage you to enjoy art in Valencia. The city’s cultural agenda offers events celebrating different types of art: illustration, design, performing arts, documentaries, etc. Take a look at the blog of our Spanish school, El Rincón del Tándem, to know more 😊

Spring brings us a lot of art in Valencia… this weekend and throughout the month of May, the city celebrates some of its most important festivals.

So that students at our Spanish school can enjoy many cultural events in the city, we have selected some of them.
Let’s take a look at them in detail!

JIV 05

From the 6th to the 8th of May
Centro Cultural La Nau, Calle de la Universidad 2
Free entrance

With the arrival of spring, one of the most eagerly awaited events for lovers of art and, in particular, illustration, is back.

The Jornadas de Ilustración de Valencia celebrates this year its 5th edition at the Centro Cultural La Nau. A building of historical value with a lot of charm that this weekend will open its doors to artists and creative people.

As in previous editions, the programme includes different activities. Among them, an illustration market in the Cloister, artistic interventions in the Espai Sailor, a demonstration on the creation of 3D characters and DJ sessions.

In addition, visitors will be able to participate in workshops to learn about techniques and other work methodologies. Among them, there will be workshops on illustration applied to design, time management and artistic tasks, watercolours, fanzine binding, use of felt-tip pens, etc.

Finally, on Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a Solidarity Action in favour of the Foundation Juntos por la Vida – Ukraine.

For the full programme and to register for the workshops, please visit the JIV website.

Poliglotía China-Valencia: Cuando dos mundos se encuentran

Poliglotía: China-Valencia is an interesting initiative that will allow us to discover Valencia from a new perspective.

Thanks to the explanations of the actor Hu Zhao, we will discover aspects of Chinese culture reflected in objects, spaces and other elements of the city.

During the tour, the guide will accompany the participants on an intercultural journey, lasting approximately 2 hours.

In addition, this initiative is part of Poliglotía. A multidisciplinary programme inspired by artistic creation through the exchange of experiences, encounters and interculturality.

The visit is free and has a maximum capacity of 20 people. The meeting point is Estación del Norte, in front of the main entrance, at 11 am.

To participate, you need to register here.

VI Docs Valencia

From the 6th to the 14th of May

Docs Valencia. Espai de No Ficció, dedicated to the documentary genre, is an initiative that promotes emerging talents and opens a window to the world through international non-fiction cinema.

The programme is divided into different categories, including Global Docs, Mirades, Panorama, Special Screenings and Mekas: 100 years.

This year Docs Valencia is dedicating a session to filmmaker Jonas Mekas and his universe, with the screening of two of his films, the presentation of two books and a photography exhibition.

The festival’s programme kicks off tomorrow, Friday 6th, with a welcome function to be held at the Cine Lys at 7.30pm. On this occasion, the movie Una elefanta sobre la tela de una araña (An Elephant on a Spider’s Web), by director Rolando Díaz, will be screened (7.30pm at Cine Lys), in the category of Special Screenings.

Various cinemas in Valencia will host the festival screenings: Cine Lys, the Octubre Centro de Cultura Contemporánea and the Sala Rialto of the Filmoteca Valenciana.

Finally, we encourage you to consult the Valencia Docs website for more details on screenings and schedules.

XI Festival 10 sentidos

From the 2nd to the 22nd of May
Various venues and theatres in the city

This May sees the return of the Festival 10 sentidos, with its rich calendar of events and shows.

This festival is one of the essential dates on Valencia’s cultural agenda, and is a benchmark in the world of the arts. In fact, the event is a container for different artistic expressions, such as performing arts, cinema, plastic arts, dance, etc.

The Festival dedicates its 11th edition to love, emphasising its most universal and cliché-free aspect.

The programme is, as always, very diverse and includes dance performances, concerts, postcasts, artistic interventions, a film series and debates on love from different approaches.

This weekend, the festival offers:

  • Inauguration of the photographic exhibition Care, Cuidar importa, by the artist Anna Álvarez-Errecalde. Friday 6, at 7.30pm at La Trini espai d’art.
  • The dance-theatre show Kind by the Belgian company Peeping Tom. Saturday 7 at 8pm and Sunday 8 at 6pm at the Teatro Principal.

This week, the programme of other festivals has also started, such as Cabanyal Íntim (from the 5th to the 15th of May).

In addition, we remind you that the Valencian Spring Craft Market in the Town Hall Square and the 57th edition of the Valencia Book Fair in the Viveros Gardens continue, as well as the programme of the Radio City International Short Film Festival.

To find out more about these three events we refer you to our previous post.

We hope that our post about art in Valencia will help you to make plans for the weekend 😊

From our Spanish language school, El Rincón del Tándem in Valencia, we encourage you to continue practising your Spanish in informal contexts, enriching your vocabulary with new words and expressions.

Have a good weekend!
