Even though the best way to learn Spanish is to live in Spanish language countries for a while, there are some other activities you can do to practice this language and increase your proficiency!

  1. Silent practice

Probably you never heard of this tip before, but after you’ll try it, you’ll love it. Sometimes it’s hard to find time or simply will in your everyday life to practice a language. If you don’t know anyone who speaks it, it’s also hard to have the opportunity to practice it with someone. This is why you have to focus on yourself and stop waiting for the right opportunity to speak it! During your everyday activities, test your vocabulary by trying to remember the Spanish word for the objects that surround you in that moment. For instance, while you’re washing the dishes, try to think how to translate in Spanish all the kitchen furniture, or the action you’re doing. You can do this every day and you don’t need to take time for it, because you’re improving your Spanish, while doing something else. So even if you’re a busy person, you don’t have any excuse for not doing it!

2. Listen to Spanish and write what you understand

This is the typical tip that everyone gives to language students as it definitively works. For this reason we cannot stress this tip enough. When you watch a movie in Spanish with Spanish subtitles your brain picks up native expressions faster than if you were studying them. This is because when making the effort of understanding the sentence, your brain links that expression to the context it’s used in, so you won’t forget it. The most efficient way to do it is by taking notes of the new words, look for their meaning and read this list from time to time. Another way to do it, is to listen to Spanish songs and try to write down on a notebook few sentences that you understand, then look for the lyrics of the song and check if the sentence match with what you wrote. You’ll be amazed by the large number of words you’ll had learnt by the end of the song/movie/episode.

Tv shows we recommend: “Los Serrano”, “Extr@”, “Vecinos”, “Aquí entre nos”, “Destinos”.

3. Practice Spanish everyday

This is not only a tip for those people who live in a Spanish-speakers environment. You can actually use Spanish everyday wherever you are. If you have a friend who shares the same passion for Spanish as you, you can motivate each other to try to speak Spanish when you’re together. Moreover, download some apps to learn Spanish and use them even for a few minutes every day. When you’re waiting for someone, or on the bus going to work, you can do this everywhere. If you have to learn Spanish but you think it’s boring, start from integrating this language in your daily life even in small things.
