Some Spanish verbs need a preposition to connect with a verb, noun or pronoun that follows. When you study Spanish remember that those prepositions may or may not correspond to the prepositions used in English. In this article you will learn the most common Spanish verbs followed by prepositions a, de, con and en.

Most Spanish verbs can be followed by infinitive, noun and pronoun:

¿Puedes ayudarme a escribir la carta? (Can you help me write the letter?)
Tengo que ayudar a mi madre con la compra. (I have to help my mother with the shopping.)
¿Quién va a ayudar a nosotros? (Who is going to help us?)

Verbs + a

Acostumbrarse, aficionarse, ayudar, dedicarse
¿A que te dedicas? (What do you do?)

A + infinitive
Aprender, atreverse, comenzar, decidirse, enseñar, esperar, negarse, volver, ir, venir
Tienes que venir a cenar con nosotros. (You have to come to dine with us.)

A + noun/ pronoun
Oler, parecerse
Pablo se parece a su padre. (Pablo takes after his father.)

De + infinitive/ noun/ pronoun
Acordarse, arrepentirse, cansarse, reírse
No puedo parar de reírme de sus bromas. (I can’t stop laughing at his jokes.)

Alegrarse
Me alegro mucho de verte. (I’m very happy to see you.)

Dejar, tratar
Deja de tratar mal a la gente. (Stop treating people badly.)

Desconfiar, disfrutar, divorciarse, enamorarse
Hay que disfrutar de la primavera. (You have to enjoy the spring.)

Con Manolo te mueres de risa. (With Manolo you will laugh yourself to death.)
